UKCES and relicensing

The UK Commission for Employment and Skills

Launched on 1 April 2008, the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) is a key recommendation in Lord Leitch's 2006 review of skills. The UKCES is responsible for the licensing process of the 25 Sector Skills Councils (SSCs).

The UKCES aims to raise UK prosperity and opportunity by improving employment and skills.

Its ambition is to benefit employers, individuals and government by advising how improved employment and skills systems can help the UK become a world-class leader in productivity, in employment and in having a fair and inclusive society: all this in the context of a fast-changing global economy.

Because employers, whether in private business or the public sector, have prime responsibility for the achievement of greater productivity, the UKCES will strengthen the employer voice and provide greater employer influence over the employment and skills systems.

Relicensing of SSCs

The UKCES is responsible for the relicensing process for the 25 Sector Skills Councils (SSCs).

e-skills UK submitted its expression of interest in August 08 and a copy of the EoI document is accessible below as a PDF:

SSC Relicensing: Expression of Interest from e-skills UK
(PDF - 120KB)

The expression of interest briefly describes e-skills UK's main achievements over the last five years, its priority areas of work, and how it supports the needs of all four nations - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

e-skills UK is now preparing its full portfolio of evidence and future plans, which will be submitted to the UKCES in due course.

Further information on the relicensing process can be found on the UKCES website. This includes the employers' prospectus, the technical prospectus for SSCs and the full timetable for all the UK's 25 SSCs.

Visit the UKCES SSC relicensing process section.
