Small and medium sized businesses

Embedding IT into the Care sector

Research in the care sector showed that although there is a high level of access to IT, e-mail and internet in the sector, only 10 per cent of managers were found to use IT within care services. Skills for Care worked with training providers across the North East to design an ITQ for the Care Sector.

Edwin Lodge residential care home
Care home owner Rohana Yasaratna is studying ITQ level 3 part time with Uxbridge College through a mix of college classes and online coursework. The ITQ is enabling him to train his own staff to a higher standard. 

Stonemarket
The Stonemarket sales team are celebrating after it became the first organisation in Coventry to receive ITQs under the new government initiative Train to Gain.

Working with awarding body, the British Computer Society, Internet Exchange was an early participant in the pilot for ITQ to the SME (Small/Medium Enterprise) sector.

Burwell Village College
ITQ highlighted the need for ongoing training and development for Learning Support Assistants, resulting in improved staff motivation and productivity. The school has learned that it is important to see training and development as part of the every day job of each individual employee.

Procam
ProCam provides professional arable farmers with a range of technically based agronomy services designed to maximise their production efficiency. ITQ has highlighted the need for consistent training, which is essential to employee motivation and productivity.

Training providers

London partnership model
FE Colleges and private training providers are working in partnership to deliver ITQ through ESF projects in Central London.

Cambridge Regional College
Working with e-skills UK and Huntingdonshire College they produced a set of collateral themed around “Technology for Business”, which played down the details of ICT and ITQ, but played up the business benefits of a better skilled workforce – especially in terms of productivity.

Henley College, Coventry
ITQ is now a core part of the College portfolio, alongside a full range of vendor qualifications and IT practitioner courses.

Warwickshire College
Getting assessors to “think light” for ITQ is seen as a major challenge since assessors need to be able to handle the flexibility inherent in ITQ programmes – and it allows a far lighter assessment regime than older NVQs.

Huntingdonshire Regional College
Huntingdonshire were brought into the ITQ pilot to help with NVQ assessment by a private sector learning provider. Their audience includes many part-time learners coming from local manufacturing and building companies.

Pendleton College
This 6th form college has found no difficulty in developing bespoke units to meet the needs of specific employers.

Cornwall Adult Education Service
CAES used the learning materials developed by the LSDA and the open source learning platform, Moodle, to pilot ITQ for their own tutor development.

Peterborough Adult Learning Service
PALS ran ITQ alongside their own internal e-tutor ETQ qualification. Their blended learning approach incorporated e-skills Passport.

West Cheshire College Electronic NVQ
This case study from Becta explores how West Cheshire College have embedded the use of e-portfolios in their VQ assessment including ITQ. 

Total People
Working with awarding body OCR, training provider Total People was one of the first companies to pilot ITQ with a selection of its clients, who range from small businesses to large corporations.

Voluntary sector

Hairnet
A custom ITQ was developed for the Citizens Advice Bureaux. 115 out of 122 learners completed ITQ through 10 one-hour sessions of one-to-one training and assessment at the workplace.

Public Sector

HMD/Royal Navy
HMD Ltd, a leading training company in the South East of England, was quick to recognise the potential value of the ITQ pilot project to its clients, which include the Royal Navy.

NHS
Happy Computers conducted a survey to measure the impact of ITQ on people’s jobs and their productivity, and to compare this both to classroom training generally and to ECDL. The responses focused on the job relevance of the learning.
