BigAmbition

There is an urgent need to change attitudes and stimulate demand among young people for technology-related degrees and careers. The BigAmbition project aims to transform the attitudes of young people to IT-related education and careers by:

  • Bringing e-skills UK, employers, universities and schools together with young people to raise awareness and understanding of a future in IT;
  • Demonstrating the excitement and relevance of IT to modern day lives;
  • Capturing the enthusiasm students already have for everyday technology and translating this into an interest in a career in IT.
  • Giving young people a central role in shaping the programme and its activities

BigAmbition includes a special focus on widening participation in higher education and improving the gender balance in IT.

Taking action

The first stage of BigAmbition included detailed research among young people to explore perceptions and attitudes and the barriers to engagement.

This led to the creation of the BigAmbition website which provides an insider view of technology careers and education opportunities - Inspirational Videos, Dream Job Quiz, Personal Know-IT Challenge and more…

Taking action works!

Computer Clubs for Girls - The award-winning CC4G programme is transforming the attitude of a generation of 10-14 year old girls to technology and IT careers. More than 66% of girls surveyed said they were now more likely to consider a career in IT.

Diploma in IT - The new Diploma in IT marks a radical reform in the way 14 to 19 year olds will learn about technology. Developed with employers, the Diploma in IT will bring technology to life. It places technology in the context of business, individuals and society, with topical, real-life contexts that introduce young people to the reality of a career in IT.
