IT Professional skills

In the UK alone there are 1.4 million IT professionals who run the nation’s IT systems and drive technology-enabled change and 4 million business managers and leaders who need to be able to understand how technology can help them to meet business objectives.

The productivity of the United Kingdom is dependent upon our ability to fully exploit the capability of information technology. This has immense implications for the role of IT professionals and managers. With this changing role comes an increasing need for IT professionals and managers to demonstrate high standards of professional competence and achievement. Professionalism is linked inextricably to skills.

Programmes

• National Skills Academy for IT
  Due to open in 2009, it will bring together an unprecedented, sector-wide collaboration of employers, educators and stakeholders to meet the skills needs of the IT workforce.
  
• e-skills procom
  e-skills procom is the 'IT Professional Competency Model' - a new, sector-wide approach to expressing IT professional capabilities. This simple and flexible model represents a breakthrough in helping employers, educators and others to communicate using a common language and framework for skills, knowledge and experience.
  
• SFIA Framework
  SFIA is a simple framework that describes the skills required for any job role in the ICT sector.
• SFIA Profiler
  Fast-start web-based skills assessment tool that supports the latest SFIA Framework.
• Apprenticeships
  e-skills UK works with companies including BT, Orange, O2, Fujitsu, EDS and telent, to operate specific initiatives to promote Apprenticeship uptake. This includes hosting an employer forum to share best practice and participate in the ongoing development of apprenticeship frameworks.
• IT Professional Development Programme - a revolutionary development programme to fast-track the careers of new IT professionals
• UCL PDP in Information and Communications Technology - professional development programme which teaches the information and communications technology and supporting management techniques driving the converged networks, software and services industry
